Diagnosis of breast cancer is the greatest shock for any woman. A never-ending train of thoughts runs through your head – “I never thought it would happen to me”, “Has it spread?”, “Do I need chemo?”, “Will I lose my breast?”, and so on… Please take a deep breath and try to take everything one step at a time. Your breast surgeon will see you and explain your diagnosis and surgical options.
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which excess breast tissue and skin are removed and breasts are reshaped to better fit the proportions of the body.
Prior to the surgery you will have a consultation with Dr. Grubnik. During this consultation, we will discuss your expectations and desired breast size, planning of the procedure, possible complications and postoperative recovery process.
The surgery is performed in theatre under general anaesthetic and takes approximately two hours. During the surgery, incisions are made around the areolae in an inverted T shaped pattern. Underlying breast tissue is removed. The breasts are reshaped and nipples and areolae are moved to a higher position on the breast. The size of the areolae is usually reduced as the same time, if desired.
